Frequently Asked Questions
if you have questions, we hope this helps.
HOW LONG CAN I KEEP YOUR SWEET CORN?
Our sweet corn is harvested fresh from the field each morning so it will "keep" a while. However, even though corn that's been sitting in your fridge for several days may look no different than the day you brought it home, don't be fooled into thinking the quality and flavor hasn't been affected. Once that ear of sweet corn is pulled from the plant the sugars that give it that great flavor begin to convert into starch so the longer you keep it, the more sweetness you're losing. We always recommend that you buy only what you know you will eat in the next day or two.
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO KEEP IT?
The fridge is your best bet. The cool temperature will slow down the sugar to starch conversion, but won't stop it altogether. Do not shuck the corn until it's ready to be cooked. This will prevent the kernels from losing much of their moisture.
CAN I FREEZE CORN?
Absolutely. Every summer many customers freeze fresh sweet corn so they can enjoy it during the off-season. When there is excess corn we offer discounts if you buy in larger quantities, so that's a great opportunity to do it. It's not difficult, but it does take some time. There are a few ways you can do it, but this article may prove helpful. How to Freeze Corn
IS SWEET CORN HEALTHY?
not sure that we are qualified to answer but i think it's safe to say that corn is a vegetable and contains many beneficial nutrients. It's the generous amounts of butter and salt that can turn a healthy option into a not so healthy option. Sweet Corn Myths
DO YOU HAVE ANY ORGANIC PRODUCE?
We do use pesticides when absolutely necessary but in a typical year we actually use none at all on many of our vegetables. We do strive to follow a minimal use pest management program, but we are not a certified organic farm and do not promote any of our produce as organic. We think small-scale organic farming is great, but there's also a lot of information out there that's meant to mislead consumers. It can be difficult to differentiate between propaganda and factual information, but our biggest selling point has always been that we eat the same foods that we sell. That will never change.
IS YOUR SWEET CORN GENETICALLY MODIFIED (GMO)?
No. All of the produce that we raise and sell in our market is non-GMO.
why do you raise non gmo sweet corn?
gmo crops are more commonly used by larger farms that cover significant acres. in a typicaly year we raise roughly 25-30 acres of sweet corn so we are small enough that we can manage pests and weeds with traditional varieties. Regardless of how you feel about this topic, there are two sides to this debate and each side has their own agenda. Here are two websites with opposing views if you are interested in learning more about it. Non-GMO Project GMO Answers
